The Bill Braxton Memorial Scholarship committee is beginning the yearly process of seeking out nominations of deserving High School rowers from the Philadelphia and surrounding area. The scholarship will be awarded in a lump sum of $2500 toward the recipient's first year of college education. We will also award the equally valued Bill Sr. and Theresa Braxton Scholarship. Requirements for application are:
1. A candidate for the scholarships must be a High School Senior participating in your school's crew program.
2. A candidate must have maintained a minimum of a B average throughout his or her four years in high school.
3. No stipulation is being placed on financial need. The candidate will only be requested to provide an estimate of family income, along with family size. Candidates from all financial backgrounds will be considered. However, greatest consideration will naturally be given to those in greatest need.
4. A candidate must be planning to attend college in fall 2008 because the scholarship money is to go toward this expense. No particular college will be given any extra consideration.
5. A candidate will not be required to row in college. An intention to row is desired, but making the team is not mandatory.
6. There are no stipulations according to the candidate's race, color, national origin, religion, age, gender or sexual orientation.
To
be considered for the Braxton Scholarship, young rowers are nominated
by their coaches and teammates. Finalists each write an essay and
are interviewed by a committee before the selection is made. Academic
scholarship, commitment to rowing, and monetary need are all factors
in the selection process.
